Black James Bond?
December 24, 2014
The twitterverse erupted today when a popular talk show host expressed his disdain at the prospect of Idris Elba, a black actor of modest following, was suggested as someday playing the iconic James Bond.
Furious, was the term applied to said host.
I won't say furious is an adjective I would apply. I think the market for a good detective/secret agent/superhero who happens to be black is a good one. The only point I would raise is that according to the canon, and the long history of Bondian lore, James is Scottish, son of Andrew Bond and Monique Delacroix, and has an older brother named Henry. He is raised from age 13 by his Uncle Max. His cousin Victor Delacroix figures in a couple of the stories.
Not furious, but curious as to how this well established long-time biography can be reconciled with a portrayal by a black actor. That most true fans are going to reject it out of hand seems rather expected, I would say.
I would say yes, definitely, to a black 'Double-O' agent but am more than a little doubtful naming him as the one and only James Bond is gonna work, and it has nothing to do with racism. Heck many fans won't even accept anyone but Sean Connery! Throwing out almost a hundred years of canon (James Bond was originally said to have been born in 1920) is sure to rile the fans of any series. Perhaps he could instead of being the "Original" he could be the son of Bond and May Day (from a "View to a Kill"), or even "Thumper" (from "Diamonds are forever"). Surely the fans would accept a Bond progeny following in his father's footsteps. With all his secret-agent adventures, there must be a few chocolate chips off the old block out there.
Yeah! Right! ;) ;)
